First (small) wave of updates to the site complete

1) layout tweaks

-made the number of votes a post has received more prominent
-decreased the font size of the story title by 1px
-changed the font color for username and category (for each post) to gray so that the emphasis would be more on the story title
-same with # comments

2) node submission limits
-users can now only submit 7 posts per day
-users can only submit 30 comments per day

3) site navigation system
-can now click upcoming and then a category to see the upcoming stories in that particular category. If you’re not on the upcoming page when you click a category, the “Hot” submissions will be shown.

Meccho revivified

Assalamu Alaikum,

After transitioning to new jobs, moving to new cities, Ramadaning and more good stuff, we managed to get out a new version of Meccho, jam packed with some new goodies:

• New theme from the 21st century
• Links on the hot page normalized by categories
• Per user customization of their own categories (now you can filter all that politics crap)
• Networks (to be expanded as we go iA)
• Some nice video embeds
• Comments ranked by vote (now it actually matters when you vote…don’t get too trigger happy)

We plan to develop categories a bit more to suit what folks want…but in the meantime, GET THE WORD OUT!…the more people who get on, the richer the content.

We’re moving along over here and are really excited about how the site is looking.  Meccho currently has 34 registered users and is getting over 1000 page views a day, which Alhumdulillah, is a great start.  

Keep up the great work and don’t forget to invite your friends and family.

Beta’ing ooh yeah

Salam All,

Things are gaining steam as we beta thanks to all you guys’ submitting, viewing, and voting.  Your feedback has been just maaavelous–the suggestions, the compliments…yeah even the bugs:)  We’ve been hearing everything from logo suggestions to feature suggestions to layout tips…and we’re working hard to get the site adjusted to the user guided-feedback.

Our philosophy was pretty simple.  Design something basic, interesting, and fun.  From there, let the user experience drive things and see how things shake out.  We’re pretty confident that, inshallah inshallah, by launch time things will be spankin good for the general public.

Until then, we trust if things continue as they have been we’ll be in good shape.  So what have we changed or will change?  The next post will keep you updated and let you know.

Final date set to be 08/15/08 for the beta launch!

The official alpha launch that took place August 1st was a tremendous success.  We thank the alpha testers who took the time to scour the site to find many of the bugs (both large and small) that we had overlooked while developing the site.

As we near completion of our pre-beta task list, we thought it might be a good idea to let those of you who are following this blog know what we have in mind for the beta launch.  On Friday, August 15th, we plan to send invitations to 50 people who we think will both find the content that Meccho provides to be interesting, and who are likely to actively participate in the development of the site.  The invitatations allow these users to register and create an account at meccho.com.  Registration will then be closed until the final launch of the site.  The beta testers will be asked to use the site as they would any other site and report any bugs that they encounter.

We hope that the beta testing process will not only excite our beta testers, but will also allow for many bugs to be stamped out prior to our full launch.

Get excited!  We are.
